Wills Brewer - Trespasses

Based on his travels throughout the Western and Southwestern United States, Brewer’s latest works document the changing nature of “designated spaces”—public parks, private lobbies, inner and outer settings for shared use. Acts of “vandalism,” of spontaneous repurposing, become marks in which one sees a new opportunity for visitation. Ceramic pieces evoke fenced-off, forbidden zones, yet invite collective trespassing where law is hypothetical, absent. The black-and-white prints are composed of found materials and Brewer's own photographs, collaged together and then photocopied to create a flat expanse in which place overlaps place, history entwines with other histories. In these layered landscapes, humans are no longer separated from what surrounds them. Ruined and empty spaces come alive with beauty and travesty—a new terrain for perception.
