"Where You From?" August, 2022 @ Tinworks Art

 

Never has this question been so complicated. The pandemic era’s sanctioning of work-from-home arrangements has prompted new intra-national migrations that question the notion of place as provenance. A peripatetic life is becoming common for the younger generation, almost required for practicing artists. After many journeys, the artists in “Where You From?” now primarily work in Montana, but the show also includes guests from Southern California and New York, further erasing the already outmoded notion of the cosmopolitan versus the provincial. Ceramics are the primary material presented, but the artists also work in wood, glass, and metal—materials with a deep connection to the earth. They use these elements to express their own personal “locations” in art, life, and culture.
